Day one of this course will introduce the novice student to the basic concepts of horsemanship and animal handling. These basic techniques must be mastered before the student can move on to any advanced riding in different types of terrain. Subjects will address how to approach the animal to how to halter and lead it. Safety will be stressed along with how to watch for warning signs of how certain horses will react. The rider must be calm and confident. Basic equipment will be introduced along with grooming techniques for the animal. Mounting, moving and handling will follow and be practiced. Day two of the course will introduce the novice student to the basic concepts of animal packing. This introduction will address animal configuration and maintenance, equipment and saddle types, packing of side and top loads, animal handling and movement techniques.
