Introduction to Basic Horsemanship (5 day course)

This course is intended to introduce the novice student to the basic concepts of riding and handling a horse.  These basic techniques must be mastered before the student can move on to any advanced horsemanship in rough weather or difficult terrain.  Subjects will address: animal configuration and maintenance to include basic animal first aid, how to inspect the animal before saddling, saddles and the different equipment used to ride, animal handling and movement techniques.  This course is conducted in both the classroom and field environment in daylight hours and moderate terrain. Students spend as much time as possible with and around the horses in order to build confidence and gain riding experience. The student must demonstrate proficiency in these techniques prior to moving on to any of the advanced courses.
